Graduation Project- Travelling memory of heritage

This is a project to design a Museum Hotel in Bukit Nanas heritage buildings, located in Jalan Raja Chulan , Kuala Lumpur. The title of the design is ‘Travelling memory of heritage’.

In Malaysia, museum defines as educational and a way of providing an interactive bridge to the past. It is also a significant tourist attraction to public. It is very important to protect the museum in Malaysia so that the cultural heritage can be preserved too. Cultural heritage is also important for our country because it helps to preserve the history in Malaysia, it promote harmony and understanding among people with culture as an instrument. Besides, it also supports culture and helps to renew tourism.

Problem & Issues

Museum hotel will be a new experience for local or tourists in Malaysia because it allows people to gain knowledge about the history and culture by staying in a hotel. Nowadays, young generation rarely appreciate and recall the cultural heritage that exists in Malaysia, by designing Museum hotel, it may help them to appreciate and create awareness about importance of the history in our country. Lack of preservation and maintenance is a common problem that facing by all the museums in Malaysia. Museum hotel might reduce the problem on lack of preservation facing by Malaysia.

Site Analysis

Bukit Nanas is right in the centre of Kuala Lumpur and KL tower, it is a variety of wonderful old heritage buildings which have been left to decay and rot in the hot tropical heat and humidity. Bukit Nanas heritage building is suitable for this design proposal because it is a heritage building that has abandoned for a long period in Malaysia.

Interior Building Analysis

Concept

The concept of designing this Museum Hotel is inspired by the melting clock from the famous drawing 'The Persistence of Memory'. The melting clock consists of softness and hardness. Softness symbolizes unconscious symbol of the relativity of space and time. This shows how the softness could relates to the building program, Museum Hotel, as museum represents the passing of time from the past to present and the new combination of Museum Hotel represent the relativity of space. Hardness symbolizes the passing of time as one experiences it on sleep.
